HERstory

Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Incorporated was founded on December 6th, 1998 at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. Sixteen women from various backgrounds came together with the common goal of uniting women among the South Asian community. The Founders created the backbone of this sorority on the basis of the five pillars of Sisterhood, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty, and Friendship. They envisioned an organization that would highlight the diverse culture through participation in community and social service projects.

Our Purpose

“The purpose of Delta Phi Omega shall be to foster unity among South Asian women, build community awareness, and gain a greater understanding of oneself and others. The sorority aspires to instill leadership traits, excel in all academic endeavors, to encourage an active relationship between the sorority and its respective university, and shall do so with the utmost compassion, dignity, and fortitude.”

WE DREAMT, WE SAW, WE CONQUERED

Charter HERstory:

In 2019, a group of young women set forth on a mission trying to establish a home that would exhibit and push to bring representation, support, and acceptance for all South Asian women on the City College of New York Campus. Inspired by the unity and brotherhood of the South Asian interest organization, Iota Nu Delta Fraternity, Inc., these women began their search for an organization of their own that would embody representation, unity, and inclusivity.

Later that year, after meeting National President Chandni Nigam, it was clear that Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. was the home that these young women longed for. The philanthropy “Children’s Education and Literacy” resonated with our founders because City College historically was known as the “Poor Man’s Harvard.” Like our university, Delta Phi Omega strived to bring equal access and opportunities to people from adverse and underprivileged backgrounds. As our founders continued to bond with sisters from across the country, they admired the passion ignited in these women for this organization and their embodiment of the five unifying pillars - Loyalty, Honesty, Respect, Friendship, and Sisterhood.

After two long years of fighting for this organization, our Six Founding Mothers - Abigail Raghunath, Samiha Sultana, Yeasha Rahman, Nahida Motin, Shrinidhi Balaji, and Warin Wohab - received approval from the Inter-Greek Council at City College to begin bringing Delta Phi Omega to campus. On May 23, 2021, after hard work, perseverance, patience, and resilience, the City College of New York Charter was established. Our sisters aspire to encourage academic excellence, enrich and mobilize the voices of our community, and foster self-determination. We are honored to uphold the legacy of Delta Phi Omega as we empower leadership, academics, service, and most of all, sisterhood.
